ANCIENT EGYPTIAN: AN INTRODUCTION

The ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic script is beautiful and intriguing. This course will help you begin to learn how to read hieroglyphs and learn about the language behind them, so that you will soon be able to read real objects from museums and ancient sites. Apart from inscriptions, ancient Egyptian literature encompasses a wide range of texts: myths, stories, religious and philosophical writings, biographies, histories, poetry, hymns, letters and court records.

Course Outline:

  • An overview of the history of the Egyptian language and the evolution of the scripts used 
  • Presentation of the unilateral, bilateral and trilateral alphabetic signs, logograms and determinatives 
  • The grammar of verbal and non-verbal sentences 
  • Noun, adjective and verb forms 
  • Presentation of a least one literary text

Learning Outcomes:

After successful completion of the course, students should:

  • Be able to read simple Middle Egyptian texts in hieroglyphs 
  • Have acquired a basic working vocabulary of the ancient Egyptian language
